How to write your PMB address.

The format

USPS has rules for how a private mailbox address is written. Cardiff Postal's own address already has a suite number, Suite 40, and when that's the case, your box number goes after the letters PMB (private mailbox), on the street line.

Type your name, or the name the box is rented under, and your box number above, then copy the result. Your name goes on the first line; the store's street, STE 40 and PMB with your box number on the second; the city, state and ZIP on the third.

What not to write

Each of these is wrong for a box at this store:

• 4031 FM 1463 RD Suite 123. Your box isn't a suite.
• 4031 FM 1463 RD Ste 40-123. USPS rules don't allow joining the suite and box numbers.
• 4031 FM 1463 RD STE 40 #123. The # sign can stand in for PMB only at an address without its own suite number, and this one has Suite 40.
• P.O. Box 123. A private mailbox isn't a P.O. Box; P.O. Boxes are rented at Post Offices.

Under USPS rules, mail that's missing the PMB can be returned to the sender as undeliverable.

Opening a box: Form 1583 and two IDs

Every mailbox holder fills in USPS Form 1583 and signs it in front of the store's staff or a notary. Spouses each fill in their own form.

Bring two current IDs:

• One photo ID, such as a driver's license, a state ID card, a passport, a military ID or a permanent resident card.
• One more ID, such as a lease, a mortgage or deed of trust, a voter or vehicle registration card, or a home or vehicle insurance policy. A second photo ID works too.
• Not accepted as ID: a Social Security card, a birth certificate or a credit card.

A notary is on staff if you'd rather sign in front of one; call (281) 394-5778 first to make sure the notary is in.

If you close the box

USPS rules have the mailbox store remail your mail, with new postage, for at least six months after the box closes, unless you give it written instructions otherwise.
